Do not tolerate discrimination at work

As most employees will agree, when you are at work, you should be judged on the performance of your duties. If you work hard and follow the rules, surely there should be no problems. Unfortunately, for many employees in California, this is not the case. Every day they are subjected to a hostile work environment and singled out for reasons that have nothing to do with their jobs.

One characteristic for which many are harassed is their sexual orientation. However, under federal law and the laws of California, discrimination against someone as a result of their orientation is illegal. Similarly, it is illegal to subject a worker to unfair treatment for being transgender. After all, what bearing does sexual orientation or gender identity have on a person's ability to do their job? The simple answer is, none at all.

Discrimination in the workplace is never acceptable. If you are the target of such treatment, or you become aware of discrimination at work, it is vital that you report it immediately. Your employer has an obligation to ensure that your rights are observed and protected. If he or she attempts to penalize you for reporting the problem, you may be able to make a retaliation claim.

It may seem like a lot to take in, but an attorney may be able to help you understand your rights and identify whether you have been the target of discrimination. Simply remember, you deserve to be treated fairly and with respect, so do not let a discriminatory employer or colleague get away with it.
