Oakland Gender Discrimination Attorneys

At many Oakland companies, women continue to be treated differently than men. Female employees are paid less and promoted less frequently, despite work performance that is equal or better than that of male employees.

Sex Discrimination and the Law

Sex discrimination is illegal under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and under California's Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). Employers cannot:

  • Pay women less than men for similar jobs.
  • Promote men ahead of women even when the employees have similar qualifications.
  • Discriminate against women who are pregnant.

Gender discrimination can take many forms. It may include overt acts, such as sexual harassment of female employees that is tolerated by management. Gender discrimination may also take the form of slotting males and females in different jobs with different levels of pay. In any form, gender discrimination is degrading and illegal.

Furthermore, your employer cannot take adverse actions against you because you report sexual harassment. If you are fired or disciplined because you reported sex discrimination or supported another person's claim, you may have a separate legal action against your employer for retaliation.
